Proteins

What is protein?

As an essential component of every cell in the human body, protein is a macronutrient made up of 22 'building blocks' called amino acids. Proteins have different jobs in the body; among other things they contribute to building muscle mass and to maintaining the muscles and normal bones.

If your protein intake does not cover your nutritional needs, you will find it harder in the long run to eat a balanced diet and to reach your goals.

Am I getting enough?

You should therefore cover up to 30 % of your daily calorie intake with protein. During exercise your body needs more protein to build and maintain the muscles and to support the recovery phase. Make sure you adjust your protein needs accordingly.

A sporty, active man who takes in up to 2,000 kcal a day* and wants to build muscle mass should take in up to 150 g** of protein a day through his diet. For a woman who wants to control her weight and takes in up to 1,400 kcal a day, the recommended daily requirement lies between 52 and 105 g of protein***.

So what should I eat?

Ideally a combination of plant and animal protein every day. Soya is one of the best sources of plant protein, because it is a 'complete' protein that provides all the essential amino acids. Other sources of plant protein such as nuts, grains and lentils are not 'complete' proteins. You should therefore eat a variety of plant proteins in order to take in all the amino acids in a good ratio. Among animal proteins, fish, poultry, eggs and low-fat dairy products are among the high-quality sources, which as an added benefit also contain iron, zinc and B vitamins.

We have explained how much protein you need. But do you also know how much protein you are already eating?

Protein

Balanced proteins and why they are so important

Since protein is needed for many important bodily functions, you have to adjust your daily protein intake to your weight and your muscle mass. Protein is a macronutrient made up of 21 amino acids, known as “building blocks”, which contribute to an increase in muscle mass and to maintaining the muscles and normal bones.

The right balance

The best method for working out your protein needs is to calculate your lean body mass (your weight without the fat), but you can also take your total weight as a guide. To do this, multiply your body weight in kg by a factor of 1.5 and you get a reasonable target value for your daily protein intake in grams. So at a weight of 64 kg you should take in about 100 g of protein a day.

Sources of protein

Soya is one of the best sources of plant protein, because it is a ‚complete‘ protein that provides all 9 essential amino acids. Other sources such as nuts, grains and lentils are not ‚complete‘ proteins. That is why you should eat a variety of plant proteins in order to enjoy all the benefits. You can be sure that all our balanced shakes contain the complete proteins needed to support your nutritional requirements.

Increasing your protein intake

As a rough guide, conventional sources of protein contain about 25 g of protein and protein snacks (e.g. Herbalife Protein Riegel) about 10 g. If you need to increase your protein intake, meal replacement shakes or protein shakes can fill that gap and be tailored to your personal needs.
Formula 1 Gesunde Mahlzeit, Formula 1 Herzhafte Mahlzeit or Tri-Blend Select and ProteinGetränkemix Vegan are ideal for a vegan diet.

Living vegan

A vegan way of eating calls for careful meal planning, so that all the recommended nutrients are taken in every day. Food supplements for protein, vitamins and minerals can help you close any gaps.

Planning ahead to get ahead

On your vegan diet you have to replace the proteins and essential amino acids that would otherwise come from meat, as well as vitamin D and calcium, which are contained in dairy products.

Proteins are found in plant foods such as beans, lentils, wholegrain products and soya-based tofu. Unlike most animal proteins, which are described as
“complete” because they contain all nine essential amino acids, most plant foods lack one or more amino acids (with the exception of soya beans). That is why it is crucial to eat a wide variety of foods. For example, the essential amino acid missing from
beans, peas and lentils is abundantly present in wholegrain products. And conveniently, beans can supply what grains lack.

Plant protein powders, such as our Protein-Getränkemix Vegan, can help with this. They are made from soya protein and increase nutrient intake with relatively few calories. Protein powders like these are easy to add to shakes, soups and baked goods. Our delicious Tri-Blend Select is made from pea protein, linseed and quinoa and likewise provides a shake with a high protein content, in the flavours banana and coffee caramel. If you eat a vegan diet, you should make sure you also take calcium, vitamin D, iron, zinc and vitamin B12 to cover your need for essential nutrients.
